Alzheimer's & Dementia

I Just Need You To Be My Friend.

This is a true, first-hand story written from the perspective of our CEO, Daniel Stringer, from the early days of Total Care Connections in 2011. The client’s last name has been changed to protect her privacy.

“What can I do for you, Ms. Whitaker?”

“Well… there’s nothing you can really do. I just need you to listen to me. You’re a good listener and, well, you’re the only friend I have in the world.”

There was a brief silence as our conversation paused for a moment.

Ms. Whitaker had been a client of ours for over a year. This was back in 2011, when Total Care Connections was just beginning, and our staff was providing care for her in her home on the east side of Tucson. She was 96 years old and had been developing dementia over the recent years, and it was clearly affecting her memory, her sense of time, and her ability to understand everything happening around her.

I had given her my personal cell phone number in the very beginning, never realizing she would call me nearly every day for the next year, and typically five, six, or seven times a day. There were nights she would call me at 1:00 in the morning wanting to discuss the caregiver schedule. If I didn’t pick up the phone, she would call again and again until I finally answered.

I would be lying if I said it didn’t drive me crazy at times. But deep down, I knew she wasn’t trying to intrude. She wasn’t trying to bother me. She was simply alone, scared, and vulnerable to a disease she could not control and circumstances she could not fully understand. We can’t fight the aging process. It comes whether we are ready for it or not.

Over that year, I had hundreds of conversations with Ms. Whitaker. Many of them didn’t make sense, and I knew the dementia was setting in. She would repeat herself. She would get confused. She would talk about things that had already been resolved. But beneath the confusion, there was something very real that kept coming through. She was afraid. She was lonely. And in the middle of all of it, she needed to know someone was still listening.

It was on one particular day that my conversation with Ms. Whitaker stood out in my memory, and I know I’ll never forget it. At the time, I didn’t fully understand everything that was happening, but I knew something was wrong. Our team knew something was wrong. Slowly but surely, over the months leading up to that day, Ms. Whitaker had begun sharing bits and pieces of the fear she was living with.

She didn’t want to lose her independence. She didn’t want anyone to come and “take her away.”

She described the days she lived in New York, entertaining the socialites of the time, traveling all over the world, and living a life full of stories most people could only imagine. She would often tell me she couldn’t believe she was still living at 96, but that God must still have some kind of plan for her.

Then her thoughts would turn back to the same fears. She was afraid people didn’t think she was capable of living in her home anymore. She was afraid someone was going to take her away. She was afraid of being alone.

What we later learned was horrifying.

A man she had trusted to help care for her dog had been manipulating and exploiting her for years. He had taken advantage of her age, her dementia, her loneliness, and her trust. Over time, he stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from a 96-year-old woman who could not defend herself.

When Total Care Connections saw the signs and understood that Ms. Whitaker may have been in danger, we called Adult Protective Services. That call began a chain of events that would eventually bring law enforcement into the situation and launch a deeper investigation into the person who had been taking advantage of her.

That is a part of this work that people don’t always see. Home care is not always just helping someone bathe, dress, eat, or keep their home clean. Sometimes care means paying attention when something feels wrong. Sometimes it means listening to the fear beneath the confusion. Sometimes it means making the call that starts the process of protecting someone who cannot protect herself.

As Adult Protective Services and law enforcement began looking into the situation, it became clear that Ms. Whitaker was exactly the kind of person predators look for. She had no strong family support. She was elderly. She was confused. She was isolated. She had resources. And she trusted someone who had no intention of protecting her.

That day on the phone, she began to cry as she described her feelings of incredible loneliness.

She wasn’t calling about the caregiver schedule anymore. She wasn’t asking for a new caregiver. She wasn’t asking me to solve anything. She just needed somebody to hear her.

Not wanting to simply pacify her with empty advice, I asked her the only thing I knew to ask.

“What can I do for you, Ms. Whitaker?”

“Well… there’s nothing you can really do,” she said. “I just need you to listen to me. You’re a good listener and, well, you’re the only friend I have in the world. I love you with all of my heart.”

I was speechless. I knew dementia was affecting her greatly, and that many of the things she told me were only glimpses of reality overshadowed by confusion. But it was as if, in a brief moment of clarity, her heart and her mind connected in her expression of vulnerability and appreciation for the more than year of conversations we’d had about life.

“I love you too, Ms. Whitaker,” was the only thing I knew to say.

She wished me a good day and hung up the phone.

In the weeks that followed, Ms. Whitaker’s life changed dramatically. On behalf of Total Care Connections, I cooperated with Adult Protective Services, the state, and law enforcement to ensure she was protected. What started as our concern for a vulnerable client became an investigation, and that investigation eventually led to a sting operation designed to catch the man who had been exploiting her.

I still remember the weight of that moment. I had started this company to care for people, serve families, and help seniors remain safe and supported at home. Yet here I was, working with investigators to help capture a man who had been preying on one of our clients. There was no hesitation in my mind. Ms. Whitaker had trusted us. She had called us. She had told us, in the only ways she could, that she was afraid. Now it was our responsibility to stand between her and the person who had been stealing from her.

In a dramatic scene, I helped lead detectives to the man who had been taking advantage of her. He was captured, arrested, indicted, and eventually sentenced to many years in prison. His assets were seized, and the state was ultimately able to recover nearly all of the money that had been stolen from Ms. Whitaker.

Nearly all of it.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars that had been taken from a vulnerable woman with dementia were brought back within reach because people paid attention, spoke up, and refused to look away.

Not long after, the state determined that Ms. Whitaker was too vulnerable to continue living safely at home. One day, the thing she feared most happened. They came to take her away.

My heart broke for her that day because I knew that was her biggest fear. I knew how badly she wanted to remain in her home. I knew how much her independence meant to her. I knew that, in her mind, leaving that home felt like losing the last piece of the life she had fought so hard to hold onto. But I also knew she was safe now, and I knew we had done our part in protecting her from someone who had sought to do her harm.

That experience shaped me. It reminded me that the elderly and vulnerable in our society do not just need services. They need advocates. They need protectors. They need people who will answer the phone, listen through the confusion, recognize the warning signs, and take action when something is wrong.

At Total Care Connections, our work has never been just about filling shifts. It has never been just about sending a caregiver into a home and checking a box. Our work brings us into the lives of people and families during some of their most vulnerable moments, and when we step into those moments, we carry a responsibility that is sacred.

We are there to care, but sometimes we are also there to protect. Sometimes we are there to defend. Sometimes we are there to stand in the gap between a vulnerable person and someone who intends to exploit them.

Ms. Whitaker taught me that in a way I will never forget. I can still hear her voice on the phone telling me she just needed me to listen. And I think about how much truth was hidden inside that simple request.

Sometimes, listening is where care begins.

And sometimes, listening closely enough can help save a life.
